Frequently asked questions

What is a telecoms consultancy?

A telecoms consultancy advises businesses on the telecoms services they buy, rather than selling those services itself. The job is to represent the buyer: working out what you genuinely need, going to the market on your behalf, comparing what comes back and negotiating the contract before you sign it.

This covers phone systems and hosted telephony, Microsoft Teams Phone, SIP trunking, contact centre platforms, business internet and leased lines, SD-WAN and wide area networks, managed LAN and Wi-Fi, mobile and data SIMs, plus the cloud, colocation and cyber security services sitting alongside them.

Look for an independent consultancy, like PrimeTel. Because we have no reseller agreements, we only recommend the best-fit suppliers to you (and we negotiate the best possible price on your behalf).

What does a telecoms consultant do?

A telecoms consultant runs the buying process most businesses have neither the time nor the market visibility to run properly. Five things happen.

  1. Establish where you are: What you run, what it costs, what’s contracted and until when, what’s not working well enough, and what the business needs it to do next.
  2. Write the brief: Your requirements turned into a structured document, so every supplier answers identical questions in an identical format, and the responses can be compared.
  3. Run the market: We build a shortlist of best-fit suppliers, then handle all the supplier engagement, demos and Q&A for you. You speak to nobody until we’re happy with the selection.
  4. Benchmark and negotiate: Proposals put side by side on the same assumptions, pricing tested against what the market genuinely charges, and term length, renewal clauses, exit provisions and anything priced outside the headline challenged before signature.
  5. Stay through delivery: Implementation, migration and go-live, holding the chosen supplier to the plan and to what they promised in the proposal.

Why use a telecoms consultancy instead of going direct to suppliers?

Because suppliers do this every day, and you do it every few years.

Telecoms suppliers employ commercial teams whose entire job is winning contracts on the best available terms. They know what the market pays, which clauses you’re most likely to skim past, and how to ensure you get a worse deal.

A consultancy evens the playing field. Suppliers compete rather than pitch, pricing gets tested against real market rates instead of a rate card, and the contract terms get picked apart by someone who has read a few hundred of them.

What is the difference between a telecoms consultancy and a telecoms reseller?

It comes down to who pays, and what they are paid for.

A reseller sells the products it carries, so whatever your requirement turns out to be, the answer will be something on its own price list. A broker or comparison site is usually paid more for placing you with some suppliers than with others.

We hold no vendor agreements, and we are paid the same rate regardless of which supplier you pick. That removes the reason to steer you anywhere. Recommendations come down to fit, service quality and what the solution costs across the full term.

It also means we will tell you when your current supplier’s offer is already competitive. Staying put is often the right answer, and a reseller has no reason at all to say so.

How much does a telecoms consultancy cost?

There is no fee to you. We are paid by the supplier you select, at the same rate whoever that turns out to be, and the arrangement goes in writing before we start so you can see exactly what we earn and from whom.

Because our position does not improve if you choose differently, there is no financial reason for us to influence the outcome. What we do have is every reason to get it right, because clients who get a good result come back for the next contract. Our client retention sits at 96%.

Running a telecoms procurement properly in-house costs around 15 working days of somebody’s time and usually ends in a weaker contract, because you are negotiating without knowing what anyone else pays.

When should you bring in a telecoms consultant?

Earlier than most businesses do. The usual triggers:

  • A contract is inside its final year, or has quietly rolled into a new term
  • Your phone system or contact centre is reaching end of life
  • You are still running ISDN or analogue lines. The PSTN switches off on 31 January 2027 and Openreach has confirmed the date is fixed
  • You have grown, acquired, moved or opened sites, and the estate no longer matches the business
  • Costs have crept up
  • You are holding quotes you cannot confidently compare

A supplier who knows you have six weeks and nowhere else to go has very little reason to move on price. Come to us with months rather than weeks, and we’ll be able to get you a significantly better deal.
